ILS 02/VOR 20
VOR RWY 02 approach 4 degrees offset.
Alghero airport is located on the north western corner of Sardinia. There is significant high ground and numerous obstacles all around the airfield. Specific note should be taken of the masts erected close to the RWY 02 final approach path and the localised high ground just to the West of the airfield. Landing on either runway with moderate crosswind from the West may result in windshear and/or turbulence due local terrain.
Certain STARs and STAR holding points are ‘partially outside controlled airspace’.
Circling prohibited to the West of the runway.
RWY 20: There are several similar ILS approaches available, based on AEA (VOR/DME) or ALG (VORTAC), and ALG NBD.
RWY 02: VOR or NDB approach requires 5km visibility, this is raised to 8km at night.
Circling to runway 02 is prohibited during HN +/- 30 minutes. During HN +/- 30 minutes, landing on RWY02 is allowed only following the VOR or NDB RWY02 Instrument Approach Procedures.
Note: DME and PAPI are required for all RWY 02 instrument approaches, also observe the Warning notes on the Jeppesen 13-1, 13-2 and 16-1 approach charts. (Consider an ILS approach to runway 20 with a light tailwind).
RUNWAY AND AIRPORT FACILITIES
Except for PAPI there is no approach light system for RWY 02.
SIDs/STARs are based on a combination of;
• AEA VOR/DME and ALG NDB, or
• ALG VORTAC
Ensure correct selection and identification of navigation aids is accomplished.
